How to hit a Fairway Wood?
1. Get a Lofted Fairway Wood
An increasing amount of the worlds Top Golf players are adding an extra Fairway Wood to their Golf Bags. For example the likes of Dustin Johnson, Collin Morikawa and Joaquin Niemann all regularly have 7 Woods in their Bag. Some also carry a 5 wood alongside their 3 wood, the 5 wood for the second shot in the third round and the 3 wood in the final.
The aim by adding more loft to your Golf Fairway woods is to simply make your life on the course a bit easier. With slightly shorter shafts and natural easy elevation, this makes it easier to hit the Golf balls solid more consistently. Resulting in a well lofted shot that will reach a higher apex making the angle of the decent to be steeper, allowing the ball to stop on the green.
2. Get the Correct Ball Position
It is a regular occurrence in Golf for players to use the Fairway Wood shot from too far back in the stance. To many, this seems like a good idea as a safe shot, as it lulls many Golfers into believing it will negate the chances of hitting the shot fat, where as the opposite is true.
Ball positions set too far back in the stance suggest a steeper angle of attack and a lower lofted club face. Both these points are opposite to what the Fairway Wood needs. The players natural reaction is to stand up, hold rotation and results in a weakened flip of the wrists by way of contact. Don’t make this mistake, position the ball forward in your stance.
3. Bounce the Golf Club off the ground
The design of the Golf Fairway Wood is to bounce off the ground as it passes through impact. This is a huge benefit yet many Golfers do not imply the sole of the Golf Club correctly. As you step up to take the shot, remember that the Golf Club is doubtful to dig into the ground, so don’t hold back. Allow yourself to strike the turf aggressively.
